Vienna's Aumannplatz to ditch roundabout for a green pedestrian haven
Aumannplatz in Vienna’s 18th District is set for a major redesign, shifting from a traffic-heavy roundabout to a pedestrian-friendly square. The current layout, unchanged since the 1980s, will be replaced with greener spaces, better seating, and improved access to the nearby Norbert-Liebermann-Park. The project follows extensive public consultation, with over 1,200 residents sharing their ideas in 2022 and 2023. Their feedback shaped plans for a water feature, a small stage, permanent restrooms, and upgraded lighting. A concrete design, including cost estimates, will be finalised over the summer.
Detailed proposals will go on display from May 12, 2023, with residents invited to give further input until mid-June. The revised plans will then be presented in September, when the district will decide whether and when to proceed. Traffic will be reorganised, with vehicles redirected along Gentzgasse. This change will create a pedestrian zone along Währinger Straße, featuring trees, seating, and outdoor cafés. The redesign will also open up direct access to Norbert-Liebermann-Park, making the area more welcoming for walkers and visitors.
The transformation aims to turn Aumannplatz into a greener, more social space. Final decisions will depend on public feedback and the district’s review in September. If approved, the new layout will reduce traffic dominance and improve pedestrian access.
