Lörrach reclaims power grid control to accelerate energy transition

The city of Lörrach has taken a major step to regain control of its power grid. Announced on May 6, 2026, the new strategy aims to speed up the local energy transition while boosting municipal oversight. A newly formed company will manage operations, with the city holding a majority stake. Under the plan, Stadtwerke Lörrach will own 51% of Stadtnetze Lörrach GmbH & Co. KG, with badenovaNETZE retaining the remaining 49%. The partnership ensures technical operations and regulatory compliance stay in experienced hands. Meanwhile, the city gains stronger influence over infrastructure decisions and future expansions.

Over €11 million has been allocated for upgrades at the Wiesenweg site, part of a broader push to modernise the grid. The initiative also seeks to improve transparency about the network’s condition, enabling more precise investments. Enhanced supply security and sustainable urban growth are key priorities.

By remunicipalising the grid, Lörrach expects to profit from operational revenues and higher business taxes. The long-term goal is to align energy infrastructure with climate targets while supporting regional economic development. The new company structure gives Lörrach greater control over its energy future. Financial gains from grid operations will fund further improvements and local projects. With clearer oversight and targeted investments, the city aims to build a more resilient and sustainable power network.
