Russia's 'Memory Garden' project plants 4,249 trees to honour fallen defenders
A new 'Memory Garden' has taken root in Dadinskoye, Khabarovsk Krai, with 15 freshly planted maple and mountain ash trees. The project is part of a larger campaign that began in 2020, bringing together volunteers from 83 countries to honour defenders of the homeland. The garden was created by local school students along the embankment. Each tree represents a tribute to those who lost their lives defending the country. This year, the campaign’s interactive map will include special markers for trees planted in memory of individuals lost in the zone of the special military operation.
Volunteers can join by registering on the campaign’s official website. Once signed up, they plant a tree in honour of a fallen defender. The initiative aims to plant over 27 million trees annually—one for every defender who has died. Khabarovsk Krai will expand the project this May by establishing 29 new Memory Gardens. In total, 4,249 trees will be planted across the region. The central event will take place in Korfovsky on May 16 at 11:00 AM, where participants will gather near the railway crossing. Saplings, tools, and a field kitchen will be provided for those taking part. Maple and mountain ash were selected for their hardiness in the local climate and their striking appearance. The trees are expected to thrive while serving as lasting memorials.
The campaign continues to grow, with thousands of trees planted each year. This May’s events in Khabarovsk Krai will add nearly 4,300 more to the total. The gardens stand as visible reminders of those who gave their lives in service to the country.
