How a Boring Garage Became a Stylish, Multi-Functional Space
A standard residential parking bay has been transformed into a stylish, multi-functional space. The renovation, led by designer René Daniella of @ownbyfemme, proves that even utilitarian areas can become high-end rooms with careful planning and creative materials.
The project blends practicality with bold aesthetics, turning an everyday garage into something far more versatile. The makeover began with a focus on durability and visual impact. Daniella chose heavy vinyl wallpaper to cover the walls, selecting a design with a repeating crane motif. Inspired by traditional East Asian art, the pattern adds elegance while resisting the garage’s shifting temperatures and moisture.
Storage was another key element. Instead of expensive custom units, the team repurposed an IKEA Pax closet system. Painted in a deep red called Rumours, the unit now houses tools and accessories. Large doors keep clutter hidden, ensuring the space stays tidy even when fully stocked. The system offers ample storage at a fraction of the cost of bespoke garage fit-outs.
The next stage of the project will introduce a home gym adjacent to the parking area. Despite these additions, the bay still functions as a daily parking space. The design proves that even a working garage can feel polished and intentional.
Every detail reinforces the idea that unconventional materials can elevate overlooked spaces. The crane wallpaper, bold storage, and planned gym all contribute to a space that feels both luxurious and lived-in. The renovation demonstrates how a clear vision and smart material choices can redefine a garage. The vinyl wallpaper, IKEA storage, and upcoming gym show that function and style can coexist. For homeowners, it serves as a practical example of turning an ordinary area into something far more dynamic.
