Rare vintage fire trucks keep a family's firefighting legacy alive

Stuart owns two rare fire trucks, each with a link to his family’s past in the fire service. The vehicles, a 1978 Dennis R Series and a 2002 Dennis Dagger, often appear at automotive shows across the UK. Both require careful upkeep, much like classic cars. The older of the two, a 1978 Dennis R Series, holds sentimental value for Stuart. His father rode on the same model when he first joined the fire service. The company behind these trucks, Dennis Brothers, began production in 1908 and stopped making fire engines in 2007.

The 2002 Dennis Dagger is even rarer—only 14 were ever built. Stuart’s wife often drives this truck at shows, drawing attention from visitors. Both vehicles need regular servicing and must be stored undercover to stay in good condition. Lights and sirens can only be used on private property, limiting their use to displays. Finding replacement parts can be tricky, as some components are no longer in production. Despite the challenges, Stuart keeps them running smoothly for public events.

These fire trucks remain a striking sight at shows, blending history with hands-on maintenance. Their connection to Stuart’s family adds a personal touch to each appearance. With proper care, they will continue to turn heads for years to come.
