New Burien exhibit honors Vicky Hartley's legacy of art and activism
A new exhibit honouring the life of Vicky Hartley has opened at Highline Heritage Museum in Burien. The display celebrates her decades of community work, activism, and artistic contributions. Friends and family helped bring the tribute together using materials from her own home. Hartley passed away on April 13, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of local engagement. In 2023, she was named Burien’s Citizen of the Year for her dedication to the area. Just this year, she also received a nomination for the Sound Generations Inspire Positive Aging Award for Activism.
The exhibit features personal touches, including a digital photo frame showing images from her childhood to her final days. Her partner of 32 years, Vince Cottone, and close friend Cydney Moore designed the display using up-cycled items from Hartley’s home, garden, and studio. Visitors can explore the collection through July. Museum staff recommend evening visits to avoid glare from window reflections.
The tribute offers a chance to reflect on Hartley’s impact in Burien. Her artwork, activism, and community spirit remain central to the exhibit. The display stays open for public viewing until the end of July.
