Harz to Lüneburg Heath boasts Europe's cleanest summer swimming spots

Swimmers in the region between the Harz Mountains and the Lüneburg Heath can enjoy some of the cleanest waters this summer. Nearly all designated swimming areas have received top ratings for water quality. Authorities regularly check over 20 natural spots to ensure safe and refreshing dips during the heatwave. The latest water quality assessments show outstanding results across the area. Every lake and pond tested has earned either a 'good' or 'excellent' rating. The star-based system awards three stars for 'excellent' quality, while no stars indicate 'poor' conditions.

Goslar leads the region with eight swimming lakes rated 'excellent'. Peine follows with five top-rated lakes, and Gifhorn offers three more. Wolfsburg, Wolfenbüttel, and Salzgitter each have one spot with the highest water quality. Braunschweig stands out with two 'excellent' lakes and two rated 'good'. Despite the high standards, strict rules remain in place. Swimming bans apply in many areas, with fines reaching €5,000 for ignoring a general ban. Unauthorised swimming in protected nature reserves can result in penalties of up to €2,000.

The region’s swimming spots provide a clean and safe escape from summer heat. With most lakes and ponds meeting top water quality standards, visitors have plenty of options. However, fines for breaking swimming restrictions remain steep to protect both people and nature.
