Global Campaign Plants One Million Trees in Record Time
A global tree-planting campaign called Roots for Change has taken root since its launch on World Earth Day 2025. Over one million trees have already been planted, with volunteers from more than 20 countries joining the effort. The initiative encourages people of all ages to take part in nurturing young trees and fostering sustainability. The campaign was first unveiled at the 2025 Global Encounters Festival in Dubai. It aligns with the Aga Khan Development Network’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions and planting five million trees by 2030. Prince Rahim Aga Khan and the Ismaili community have actively participated in the tree-planting drives.
In India, planting efforts have spread across multiple regions. Gujarat saw trees planted in cities like Vapi, Khanvel, Udhwa, Daman, Valsad, Umbergaon, Sanjan, and Silvassa. Mumbai also contributed, with new trees taking root in Thane. The initiative focuses on building a sense of responsibility toward nature. Families and local communities are encouraged to plant, care for, and protect young trees as part of a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship.
With one million trees already in the ground, Roots for Change continues to expand its reach. The campaign’s success depends on ongoing community involvement and the shared goal of sustainability. Organisers plan to keep growing the initiative until the 2030 target is met.
