Virgil Abloh's Unfinished Vision Still Reshapes Design in 2022
**Today would have been Virgil Abloh's birthday: His significant influence on the creative scene remains unbroken to this day.**
He was a creative boundary-crosser - this description fits **Virgil Abloh** best. For the creative community, he was one of the most influential figures, as he understood like no other how to break boundaries and think interdisciplinary. As Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and founder of his own label Off White, he merged **art** with design with interior. Social aspects were as important to Abloh, who originally studied **architecture**, as aesthetics. Even now, after his death in November 2021, his influence is evident. During the **Salone del Mobile 2022** in Milan, various brands presented new collections that began as collaborations with the designer.

Collaborations became Abloh's signature over the years, and his way of creating something new. Especially the community, design as a social practice, counted for him. This brought the American designer together with Cassina - to break boundaries and question spatiality together. With 'Modular Imagination', two objects of different sizes were created. The matte black **interior** accessories can be placed anywhere in the living area and are used. The 'Modular Imagination' objects score with versatility; whether as a pouffe, bench or table - the two combinable accessories hold their own.

The spectrum of brands that the late designer **Virgil Abloh** worked with is large. Among them are names of big players but also smaller fashion labels, interior, and **design studios**. So it's not surprising that Alessi presented a project during the Salone del Mobile 2022 on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, which was created together with Virgil Abloh - and is supposed to herald the future of the Italian design brand. The accessory in question: a set of cutlery. When Virgil Abloh (together with his London design team Alaska Alaska) approached Alberto Alessi a year ago, he had a new approach in mind for the **tableware** area, which should combine functionality with Alessi aesthetics. According to Alberto Alessi, Abloh's first idea reminded him of a wrench. The result? A set of cutlery made of coarse stainless steel that holds knife, fork, and spoon together with a carabiner. A camping cutlery set? Maybe - always with you and incredibly practical.
In August 2019, Abloh's own label Off-White launched the first home collection with living accessories that fit both in the kitchen and bathroom and bedroom. Off-White has also worked with furniture giants **Ikea** and **Vitra** and continued its step into the interior. In 2022, Off-White presented the fourth own collection at the Milan Furniture Fair, which continues the 'Ceramics' line from 2019. In addition to various **dishes** like plates, cups, bowls, and more, three white-glazed ceramic vases in different sizes are now added, which come with a small street art touch: fluorescent green color was sprinkled over the lower part of the vases - a homage to the streetwear origin of the Off-White brand.

The label struck again with the release of selected products in collaboration with Ginori 1735 - a collaboration that debuted last year. Specifically, cylindrical vases, lid boxes, and square ashtrays from the archives of the traditional porcelain manufacturer were revisited and reinterpreted. While both size and shape were further developed, the pure white and classic porcelain was retained. Characteristic of Off-White are the typical arrow details and handles, framed by ivy leaves.
Admittedly, this collaboration has less to do with home accessories and more with product and fashion design: In December 2021, Mercedes-Benz presented a Maybach S-Class S680 concept car equipped with black and beige Nappa leather and sand-colored decorative strips on the steering wheel, doors, dashboard, and headliner - designed in cooperation with Virgil Abloh.
In June 2022, Mercedes-Maybach x Virgil Abloh (or Off-White) takes it a step further and presents the 'Project Maybach' capsule collection; a fashion collection in earthy tones with sporty elements. Included are gloves, caps, hoodies, and t-shirts. The perfect proof that the boundaries of design, interior, art, and fashion are blurring - a process that Virgil Abloh himself has significantly driven.
