Dubai launches bold plan to plant thousands of flame trees citywide

Dubai has begun a major initiative to plant thousands of flame trees across the city. The project, announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to expand green spaces and enhance urban sustainability. Known for their striking orange-red blooms, these trees will soon line streets, parks, and public areas.

Sheikh Hamdan shared the news on his official X account, accompanied by an animated video marking the start of the flame tree season. The species, scientifically called Delonix regia, is already one of Dubai’s most iconic sights, flowering from late April to the end of July.

The planting drive will cover residential zones, entertainment spaces, key intersections, and community majlises. More than 50,000 flame trees have already been planted along roads and in public areas. At full maturity, each tree reaches 9 to 12 metres in height and spreads 12 to 15 metres wide, offering ample shade. Flame trees grow rapidly, taking just three months to go from seed to seedling. Their lifespan ranges from 40 to 60 years, making them a long-term addition to the city’s landscape. The initiative supports Dubai’s goals of increasing green cover, lowering urban heat, and improving year-round liveability.

The project follows a directive from Dubai Municipality to boost sustainability and urban comfort. With thousands of new trees, the city expects cooler public spaces and a more vibrant environment. The flame tree’s broad canopy and vivid blooms will further define Dubai’s streetscapes for decades.
