Couple thrives in a $37,500 tiny house for 13 years—here's how
Jessica Rust and her husband have spent 13 years living in a tiny house they bought for just $37,500 (around €33,000). The 527-square-foot (49-square-metre) home in New Orleans was once a classic shotgun-style property. Their decision to downsize has given them financial freedom and a unique way of life. The couple purchased the house in 2013, but securing financing proved difficult. Banks refused mortgages under $50,000 (€42,500), forcing them to take out a personal loan instead. They cleared the debt within three months.
The home consists of a single open space, with an archway dividing the living area from the bedroom. The Rusts remodeled and furnished it themselves, using secondhand items to keep costs low. Their favourite part is the outdoor area, which they use for entertaining guests. Originally a traditional shotgun house, the property now reflects their minimalist lifestyle. The small size means lower bills and fewer expenses, allowing them to focus on what matters most to them.
The Rusts have lived mortgage-free in their compact home for over a decade. Their choice to embrace small-space living has cut costs and simplified their lives. The financial flexibility they’ve gained remains the biggest benefit of their decision.
