For years, the kitchen has evolved beyond its role as a mere workspace, becoming the heart of the home—a place for cooking, dining, gathering, and savoring life. But what will define kitchen design in 2026? According to AD100 designer Justin Howlett, stainless steel remains a staple, but when paired with warm woods, it reveals a surprisingly cozy side. Meanwhile, leading designers are moving away from neutral palettes, embracing rich hues and textured surfaces: deep burgundy marble, bold wood grains, and hand-glazed tiles.

Flack Studio predicts a shift away from pristine, sterile surfaces in 2026, favoring materials that age beautifully over time: oxidizing copper, hand-glazed tiles, and natural stone that develops character with use, gradually replacing the classic all-white kitchen fronts.
Retrouvius highlights the striking contrast of mixing different wood species in a single kitchen.

But it's not just materials and finishes making a statement in 2026. Appliances and custom kitchen islands are increasingly serving as focal points, notes Justin Howlett: "Until now, bold designs like a large stainless steel range or a freestanding refrigerator were more common in American kitchens, while European designs tended to keep such elements subtle. That's changing now, giving kitchens a chance to show more personality."
Tobias Petri and Sven Petzold, founders of Holzrausch, believe every kitchen should be tailored to its space and the lives of those who use it—custom-built with fine, artisanal details.
Their "Italian Bar Kitchen," designed for a turn-of-the-century Frankfurt apartment, pairs black terrazzo flooring with American walnut paneling on the walls and ceiling, complemented by Alpe Verdi natural stone countertops.
