April Is One of the Best Months for Planting Fruit Trees at Your Dacha

Why April Is the Perfect Month to Plant Fruit Trees at Your Dacha

This is the time when the soil has already thawed, but plants have not yet begun to bud, creating ideal conditions for seedlings to take root. Right now, gardeners can lay the foundation for future harvests, says experienced dacha gardener Daria Ivanova.

Why April Is the Best Time to Plant Fruit Trees

Experts note that spring is the optimal season for planting bare-root seedlings. Before the summer heat sets in, they have time to adapt and grow stronger, reducing the risk of plant loss, Ivanova explains.

Seasoned gardeners also point out that sap flow has not yet become active in April, while the soil has already thawed. This creates favorable conditions for plants, the expert adds.

Best Fruit Trees to Plant in April

Among fruit trees, apple trees remain the top choice, Ivanova says. Varieties like Antonovka, White Filling (Bely Naliv), and Melba are highly winter-hardy and take root well even in challenging conditions. Pears are nearly as popular—particularly zoned varieties like Lada, Chizhovskaya, and Kafedralnaya, which are resistant to temperature fluctuations, the expert notes.

Plum trees also establish themselves well, especially varieties like Smolinka and Kuban Comet, she adds.

Key Planting Tips

Experts emphasize that successful planting largely depends on the quality of the seedlings. The root system should be well-developed and show no signs of drying out. Before planting, it is advisable to prepare the hole in advance—enrich the soil with nutrients and ensure good drainage.

Proper April planting gives trees time to adapt and develop their roots. Under favorable conditions, the first fruit may appear as soon as one or two seasons later, reports NEWS.ru.
