Hästens Unveils Ultra-Luxury Mattresses with Wayne Gretzky's Wellness Campaign
The bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home-something interior designer Ferris Rafauli knows all too well. While carefully crafting restful spaces for his luxury client base, Rafauli found himself reaching for Hästens mattresses again and again. There was just one small problem. "They were never really celebrated," Rafauli tells our website. "They were performance items that were covered up by linens, bedding, and furniture."
Fortunately, the Swedish brand had the perfect solution-bring Rafauli on board to design a first-of-its-kind mattress. The final product, the Grand Vividus, married Hästens's craftsmanship with a design-forward sensibility. Debuting in 2020, Grand Vividus made quite the splash-it featured prominently in rapper Drake's Toronto residence, which Rafauli also designed, and immediately raised eyebrows for its lofty price tag, which starts at $868,990.
However, the brand maintains that Grand Vividus was worth it then-and it's certainly worth it now. Since the bed's inception six years ago, Rafauli and Hästens have continued to refine the product, and are now introducing its latest evolution. So what's changed? The tweaks focus largely on performance, something that's been continuously assessed throughout the product's lifespan. Grand Vividus has always taken over 600 hours to make by hand, and is filled with horse hair, wool, and cotton-its latest iteration adds even more of these material layers. The result is a heavier mattress that's ultimately even more comfortable.
What remains the same is Grand Vividus's signature element: its leather base. Made with check-patterned nubuck leather that's secured with brass studs, it resembles a luxurious steamer trunk-even more so with its brass nameplate. It's a nod to the company's 19th-century saddle manufacturing history and the distinctive design signature Rafauli longed for when he first began incorporating the brand's products into his projects. More than just a comfortable mattress, Grand Vividus is also a beautiful piece of furniture.
The Vividus universe has expanded since its inception as well. Rafauli and Hästens created an offshoot mattress, drömär, that's available at a slightly more accessible price point-albeit without the leather base. Drömär is receiving a performance upgrade similar to the Grand Vividus; there are also mohair headboards available for both product lines. What's entirely new with this campaign is a line of luxe nightstands, also designed by Rafauli.
Another layer of Grand Vividus's big new moment is a partnership and campaign with Wayne and Janet Gretzky. The couple is clients of Rafauli's, and as an athlete, the former understands the power of sleep and how it can impact performance. In fact, as longevity and wellness take center stage in the cultural zeitgeist, it feels as if many are coming around to what Hästens has known for decades-that a good night's sleep can, in fact, make a big difference in your day-to-day life. "If you speak to wealthy people who have everything, they'll all tell you the same thing: Without your health, you have nothing," says Rafauli. "Rest is the center point of wellness."
