Lünen Shortlisted for Germany's Top 'New Mobility City' Award in 2026
Lünen has been named one of eight finalists for the TÜV Award 'New Mobility City' 2026. The competition recognises towns and cities leading the way in smart, sustainable transport planning. A panel of experts shortlisted Lünen after reviewing its safe transport networks and integrated approach to urban mobility. The TÜV-Verband and the Initiative for Safe Roads launched the award this year. They analysed traffic data and accident records from over 700 German municipalities. Lünen stood out for its proven safety measures and was fast-tracked into the final round for the Regional Spaces category.
On April 28, Arnold Reeker, Lünen’s first deputy mayor, and Melanie Koischwitz, head of Mobility Planning and Traffic Management, presented the city’s strategy to judges. Their concept combines climate protection with urban planning to create safer, greener transport options. Key projects include the Viktoria Landscape Park and the IGA Cycle Path, a major north-south route. These developments encourage short-distance travel and offer reliable alternatives to car use. The award winners will be revealed at the TÜV MobiCon conference in Berlin on June 10.
Lünen’s selection highlights its progress in making transport safer and more sustainable. The city’s focus on climate-friendly planning and secure routes has earned it a place among Germany’s top mobility innovators. The final decision will be announced at the upcoming TÜV conference in the capital.
