Edinburgh's Motel One Reopens After a Bold, Culture-Inspired Makeover

Motel One Edinburgh has completed a major renovation to modernise its historic site. The updated hotel now aims to feel like an 'extended living room' for visitors, blending comfort with local character. Guests can enjoy views of the city’s Old Town from the second floor while experiencing a fresh, contemporary design.

The project focused on upgrading all 140 bedrooms and the public spaces. Existing materials and structures were reused to keep the renovation sustainable. Tartan finishes and Motel One’s signature turquoise and brown colours now feature throughout the interiors.

Bargtied Interior Architecture, a studio based in southern Germany, led the design work. Svenja Hansen, the firm’s founder, previously spent 15 years as head of design at Motel One. The public areas were crafted to echo the lively spirit of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. AFA oversaw the project as the main manager, ensuring the renovation ran smoothly from start to finish.

The updated Motel One Edinburgh now offers a mix of modern comfort and local charm. Its design reflects the city’s cultural energy while maintaining the brand’s signature style. The hotel is ready to welcome guests into its refreshed spaces, blending relaxation with a touch of Edinburgh’s vibrant atmosphere.
