The Tower's Somber Salute: A Blooming Tribute to the Heroes of the Second World War

Gear up, folks! On Thursday, May 8, a striking tribute known as "The Tower Remembers" will be unveiled to the public, marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

"This is the last significant anniversary of the Second World War where we could have veterans with us to share their tales," remarked Rhiannon Goddard, who's spearheading the project.

In cooperation with volunteers, they're meticulously assembling and installing a sea of poppies, a traditional British symbol of remembrance for those who perished in the two World Wars. The 900-year-old Tower of London, looming over the north bank of the Thames, will once again be adorned with poppies, much like it was in 2014 to mark the centenary of World War I's onset.

For that installation, approximately 900,000 poppies were used, each symbolizing a life lost in Britain and its colonies. This new exhibition, though, will feature 30,000 poppies from the same collection, meant to provoke thought about the enduring wounds of war.

The poppies cascading down from the central White Tower are a testament to the damage inflicted on the Tower during the Blitz, Germany's widespread bombing campaign in Britain.

Harshida Amin, a 62-year-old volunteer, is among those contributing to this heartfelt display. She shared, "I wanted to participate in this project because I believe it's crucial to honor all the British soldiers from the colonies who fought and sacrificed for our freedom."

The installation will be open to the public from May 8 until Armistice Day on November 11, offering visitors a chance to reflect upon the human cost of war and pay their respects to those who fought in the Second World War.
