Community unites to clean Playa de Cala Sardina before summer rush

A beach clean-up event is set for Sunday, May 10, at Playa de Cala Sardina near the Malaga and Cadiz border. Organised by Melissa Vaughn and the group Eco Amigos, the session will focus on removing plastic and litter from the coastal stretch before summer maintenance begins. Volunteers are asked to arrive by 10:30 AM for a ninety-minute clean-up. The organisers will provide heavy-duty bin bags, protective gloves, professional litter-picking sticks, and hand sanitising gel. Families are welcome to bring children, as the event aims to teach environmental responsibility, though dogs will not be permitted.

The effort targets debris along Punta Chullera, a key area for wildlife and beach visitors. After the clean-up, participants will gather for a drink and a chance to socialise. Local residents are encouraged to join, helping to keep the shoreline clean ahead of the summer season. Council maintenance crews will later take over regular upkeep of the area.

The event offers a chance for the community to contribute to a cleaner marine environment. By clearing plastic and litter, volunteers will help protect local wildlife and ensure the beach remains enjoyable for visitors. Refreshments and socialising will follow the morning’s work.
