Wolfsburg: Station Passage to Be Redesigned as a Gateway Between Central Station and City Center
Wolfsburg's Station Passage to get a €4.4 million urban facelift
The Station Passage—a key entry point linking Wolfsburg Central Station with the city center—is set to undergo a comprehensive upgrade and forward-looking redesign as part of the urban development of the Nordkopf district. In its May session, the city council will decide on preparations and implementation for open-space planning, road construction, and drainage engineering along the pedestrian route between the central station and downtown.
Around €382,000 has been earmarked for this next critical phase, according to the city. The planning area covers approximately 9,800 square meters, with estimated construction costs for the redesign totaling roughly €4 million.
A Thoughtful Redesign in Progress
Planning efforts will focus on the plaza between the hotel and Cinemaxx, which marks the northern entrance to the passage, as well as the aesthetic and functional enhancement of the passage itself. The Sara-Frenkel-Platz—the southern link to Porschestraße—will also be revamped. Additionally, the project will address connections to east-west pedestrian axes and reorganize cycling infrastructure along Heinrich-Nordhoff-Straße.
"By reimagining the Station Passage, we are sending a strong signal about the positive transformation of our city center," said Wolfsburg's Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "What was once an understated area will become an inviting, green, and safe urban space—one that encourages people to arrive, linger, and connect while enriching the cityscape for years to come."
Kai-Uwe Hirschheide, First City Councilor and Head of Urban Development, added: "The Station Passage is a cornerstone of the Nordkopf district's future. Our vision is a high-quality public space—climate-adapted, with greater amenities, more greenery, and clearly organized, conflict-free routes for pedestrians and cyclists."
Broader Development Underway at Nordkopf
Beyond the Station Passage planning, the Nordkopf district is seeing multiple parallel initiatives. Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects is developing an overarching urban master plan, while coordinated efforts are producing new traffic and open-space concepts. Meanwhile, the zoning plan for Nordkopf Mitte—a critical framework for future investor projects—is nearing completion.
