Gelsenkirchen's Historic Stadium Gets a Futuristic VR Makeover
Schalke's VR Experience Center Brings Football and Industrial History to Life in a Modern Way
"The VR experience center will breathe new life into a historic site steeped in football and industrial heritage, blending cultural legacy with cutting-edge technology to create an appealing attraction for visitors from far beyond the region," said Government President Andreas Bothe yesterday (April 7) during the presentation of the funding approval at Gelsenkirchen-Schalke's Glückauf-Kampfbahn stadium, where the grant was handed over to the Schalker Markt Foundation.
Gelsenkirchen's Lord Mayor Andrea Henze also underscored the project's significance: "The chance to immerse yourself in the past of this storied Gelsenkirchen landmark through a virtual reality experience center is truly fascinating and adds another innovative highlight to our current offerings. The Schalker Markt Foundation is merging a digital world with the history of FC Schalke 04, making it tangible in three dimensions. In Schalke-Nord, the Glückauf-Kampfbahn is more than just a football venue—it's a monument, a sports garden, and a neighborhood park with countless athletic and leisure opportunities, playing a key role in enhancing the district's appeal."
A Groundbreaking Experience at a Historic Site
The Glückauf-Kampfbahn—once an internationally renowned sports venue—will gain a unique new attraction with this project. Inside the former youth office of FC Schalke 04, a VR experience center will open, offering fresh perspectives on the stadium's and the region's rich history.
Drawing on a vast archive of historical photographs spanning over a century of the stadium's past, modern virtual reality technology will transform these images into walkable, three-dimensional scenes. Visitors will be able to step deep into history, experiencing the evolution of football, industry, and migration in the Ruhr region in an immersive way.
The center will appeal to football enthusiasts as well as culture and history buffs alike. As a new focal point, the project further enhances the protected heritage site of the Glückauf-Kampfbahn and complements Gelsenkirchen's existing tourist attractions. At the same time, it boosts local economic activity in the Schalke district by creating additional incentives for day-trippers and overnight visitors.
The total project cost amounts to €540,358.40. With a funding rate of 80 percent—50 percent from EU funds and 30 percent from state resources—the Münster Regional Government has approved a grant of €432,286.72.
