A $150K Kitchen Renovation Transforms a Maryland Home's Heart

Meg Leonard renovated her kitchen a few years after purchasing her home in Annapolis, Maryland. She replaced the dark cabinetry from the early 2000s with white cabinets and brass hardware. Leonard also created a cozy nook that serves as both a dining and entertainment space.

Few things bring Leonard as much joy as sitting in her kitchen nook surrounded by loved ones. More often than not, a sports game plays on the wall-mounted TV, the kids dash through the kitchen into the backyard—visible through the panoramic window opposite the screen—and food waits just steps away on the kitchen island, ready to be enjoyed.

Since Leonard and her husband incorporated the nook during their 2023 kitchen renovation, it has become a favorite gathering spot in their home, whether they're sharing a quiet dinner as a family of three or hosting a lively party.

Leonard invested $150,000 (€130,000) in her kitchen renovation—a price she says was worth every penny.

"Sometimes, nearly 15 people squeeze into the nook, and it's just so much fun," she told our website.

Leonard also felt the kitchen's original dining area wasn't living up to its potential. To fix this, the kitchen was extended to the front of the house, while the utility closet was relocated into an interior wall after the expansion.

After moving in, Leonard and her husband first renovated the primary bedroom and bathroom, adding a laundry room upstairs. They purchased the home in May 2021—a four-bedroom, three-bath property in Annapolis. At roughly 2,900 square feet, the house was on the pricier side, but it was exactly what Leonard wanted.

"It had good bones, but it had been expanded in different phases," Leonard said. "It just felt right."

A year into homeownership, Leonard began making changes. She tackled the kitchen, which she called the "heart of the home."

"I decided to renovate the kitchen because it just wasn't functional," she said. "The cabinets were dark, the countertops were small, and I wanted to create an open, inviting atmosphere."

Leonard designed the kitchen herself, choosing white cabinets and countertops paired with a marble slab.

"I wanted a neutral, cozy foundation that I could then layer with color and texture," she explained.

The tiled floors and dark wood window frames had to go.

She kept the arched layout but gave it a modern update.

The white cabinets and countertops brightened the space.

Leonard loved the large kitchen island but knew it needed a few tweaks.

The island's built-in features now make it far more functional.

Closing off the old front door was a key move for Leonard.

The nook includes a built-in bench.

For Leonard and her family, the space has become a hub for hosting guests and enjoying time together.

Now, her family adores the kitchen.

In total, Leonard spent about $150,000 (€130,000) on the renovation.
