New Year's Eve dive sets the annual ambiance

Rewritten Article:

Celebrating the New Year with a chilly plunge, over a hundred enthusiasts gathered at Nauthólsvík for a New Year's Eve swim on the 31st of December.

Herdís Anna Þorvaldsdóttir, the chairperson of SJÓR, Reykjavik's Sea Swimming Association, expressed her delight as they finally got the opportunity to dive into the icy waters since 2020.

Unlike regular swims throughout the year, this event attracts participants dressed in their finest attire to celebrate the incoming year. mbl.is/Arnþór

Chillin' in the Cold

Þorvaldsdóttir noted that this year's conditions were somewhat atypical.

"The unbelievably cold weather, -2.2°C, was last recorded in 2018 and was equaled several times this year, including today. Additionally, the thickness of the ice covering the water was quite extraordinary. It was truly breathtaking this year due to the ice making it so peculiar."

Despite the bitter cold, Þorvaldsdóttir remarked that it didn't deter people from taking the plunge. "Caution was crucial, but the cold temperature didn't deter anyone."

Fancy Dive

Þorvaldsdóttir herself wore a shimmering gown to celebrate the New Year, while many others appeared in their most prestigious attire, with many groups vibrantly coordinated in thematic styles. She commented that her sequined gown undoubtedly helped in braving the cold.

"Why not dress up for such an icy feat to set the tone for the entire year?"

The swim on New Year's Day 2023 is a fantastic way to start the year, according to Þorvaldsdóttir.

"After diving into the bracing sea and challenging nature's laws, it's an incredible feeling to face the day and year ahead with renewed vigor. It's such a rewarding experience that makes other challenges seem less formidable as it instills a sense of well-being and joy. That's why swimming on New Year's Day is such an incredible way to kick off the year, setting a positive tone for the entire year."
