Statement from the Diocese of Fulda
Fulda Diocese transforms historic theology building into modern Catholic Academy hub
The Diocese of Fulda has begun the concrete construction phase for the comprehensive renovation of the seminar and lecture hall building of the former Faculty of Theology.
Following extensive planning, work has now commenced to restore and remodel the historic faculty building, which will in future house the Catholic Academy of the Diocese of Fulda.
The aim is to bring the building complex up to modern technical standards while carefully integrating it into its baroque surroundings in compliance with heritage conservation requirements.
In the first phase of construction, a temporary fence will be erected around the site as part of the setup to secure the area. This will be followed by the dismantling of the glass corridor leading to the chapel and a stone wall.
This will allow construction vehicles to access the faculty building directly from Kronhofstraße, avoiding the need to cross the heavily frequented cathedral square.
First Construction Phase
A central focus of the initial renovation phase is the gutting of the building, including hazardous material remediation, as well as the implementation of extensive fire safety measures.
Planned measures include the creation of fire and smoke compartments, the establishment of escape and rescue routes, and the installation of an updated lightning protection system, emergency lighting, and fire alarm system.
Additionally, the electrical systems, building management technology, and heating, ventilation, and plumbing installations—much of which is outdated—will be completely replaced. The project also envisions the maximum possible use of renewable energy sources.
Structural and technical work will further include reinforcing and restoring the roof truss, historic wooden staircases, and selected ceilings.
Another key priority is improving accessibility through barrier-free entry points, the installation of a new elevator, and accessible restroom facilities.
Expert Restoration
Within the historic structure, which will be professionally restored and permanently preserved, modern offices and versatile seminar rooms equipped with contemporary media technology will be created.
The cost of renovating the faculty building amounts to approximately five million euros.
Both the financing and the future use of the building have been explicitly approved and endorsed by the responsible bodies of the Diocese of Fulda, particularly the Church Tax Council.
Catholic Academy in a Historic Setting
In its new location, the Catholic Academy of the Diocese of Fulda will offer a diverse program of cultural and educational events, exhibitions, pastoral initiatives, and forums for societal dialogue and exchange.
By repurposing the former faculty building into the Catholic Academy, the Diocese of Fulda is reviving the original vision of its builder, Prince-Bishop Heinrich von Bibra (1711–1788).
His goal in establishing the combined episcopal and monastic library was to create a public space for scholarship and education accessible to broad segments of the population.
The overall project draws on core elements of the Benedictine tradition: the interplay of spiritual life and faith, practical and intellectual work, scholarship and education, and lived hospitality.
