Thuringia's 'Hike with Others' Challenge Unites Generations with Cash Prizes
A new hiking challenge is set to bring people together in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen region. Running from May 14 to September 13, 2026, the 'Hike with Others' initiative encourages participants of all ages to explore the area with family, friends, or even solo. Cash prizes will be awarded to lucky winners every four weeks. The challenge welcomes everyone, from seasoned hikers to self-proclaimed 'couch potatoes'. Every hike—no matter the length or pace—counts toward entry. Participants can join guided tours or strike out on their own, submitting their walks either online or by post.
Grandparents are especially encouraged to take part with their grandchildren, fostering connections across generations. The initiative is backed by the Free State of Thuringia, funded through the *Solidarisches Zusammenleben der Generationen* (Solidarity Across Generations) programme. Prizes of €200, €100, and €50 will be drawn every four weeks, giving multiple chances to win. Full details, including rules and data protection guidelines, are available at [www.prachtregion.de/wma](www.prachtregion.de/wma).
The challenge aims to get people moving while enjoying the region’s landscapes. With no restrictions on hike distance or difficulty, organisers hope to see broad participation. Winners will be selected at regular intervals, adding extra incentive to explore the outdoors.
