May's 10-Day Window Can Transform Your Onion and Garlic Harvest
A short window in May offers the perfect chance to boost onion and garlic crops. Between May 5 and 15, warming soil and emerging leaves create ideal conditions for bulb development. Gardeners can take advantage of this brief period with a single, well-timed treatment to ensure strong growth. The key to success lies in a balanced mix of nutrients. A homemade 'magic' fertiliser—made from blood meal, borax, iodine, and wood ash in a 10-litre bucket of water—provides the right blend of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients. Too much nitrogen, however, pushes energy into leafy growth, leaving bulbs small and weak.
Timing and technique matter just as much. Early mornings, between 6 and 9 AM, are best, as cooler soil and peak plant activity help absorption. Before applying, the soil must be damp—water it first if dry. Then, pour 200–250 ml of the mix directly at the roots, avoiding the leaves to prevent damage. This ten-day window is critical. During this time, the plant decides whether to form a large bulb or waste energy on excessive foliage. A single treatment per season is enough, as overfeeding or neglect can both harm the crop.
The method ensures onions and garlic develop sizable, healthy bulbs without unnecessary foliage. By following these steps—correct mix, precise timing, and careful application—gardeners can support their plants during this short but vital growth phase. The result is a stronger harvest with minimal effort.
