Mala House in Kerala Blends Tradition with Modern Living
A new family home in Thrissur, Kerala, blends tradition with modern living. Named Mala—meaning the deep longing that inspired its creation—the house was designed by Thomas Parambil Architects. It draws from the owner’s childhood memories of their grandparents’ ancestral tharavad, reimagined for today’s needs.
The 2,700 sq ft home sits on a single floor, arranged in a C-shaped plan. At its heart lies a courtyard, a nod to Kerala’s Nalukettu architectural style. This open space keeps the house cool and connects indoor and outdoor living, much like the verandahs that shield against the tropical heat.
A lily pond runs along the front, crossed by a slender granite bridge at the entrance. The main structure uses locally quarried laterite stone for its walls and foundation, topped with terracotta roof tiles. Inside, timber and terrazzo continue the natural material palette, chosen not for style but to honour the region’s traditions. The layout includes a living room, media room, dining area, kitchen, utility space, and three bedrooms—each with its own washroom. Every detail reflects a commitment to place, ensuring the home stays true to its rural Kerala roots.
Mala stands as a quiet tribute to heritage, built for the owner’s parents. Its design preserves the rhythm of rural life while offering modern comforts. The house’s materials and layout ensure it remains rooted in the landscape that inspired it.
