Hessian Dialect Award 2027 Opens with €8,000 for Language Preservation

The Hessian Dialect Award will return for its third edition in 2027. Organised by the Hessian Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, Viticulture, Forestry, Hunting, and Homeland Affairs, the prize recognises efforts to preserve and promote local dialects. A total of €8,000 will be awarded to successful applicants this time around. Applications for the 2027 award will open on June 1, 2026, and close on September 30, 2026. Individuals, clubs, and initiatives working to keep Hessian dialects alive can submit their entries online at www.alrhessen.de/mundartpreis. The award seeks to highlight voluntary work in dialect preservation while encouraging broader interest in linguistic diversity.

Winners will be revealed in February 2027, timed to coincide with International Mother Language Day. The prize money is intended to support projects that actively engage with Hessian dialects, whether through education, cultural events, or media.

The award continues to offer financial backing and public recognition for dialect preservation. With submissions opening in mid-2026, organisers hope to attract a wide range of participants. The results will be announced early the following year as part of global celebrations of linguistic heritage.
