German Leather Museum secures €31M for landmark renovation and modernization

The German Leather Museum in Offenbach is set for a major renovation after securing funding from both federal and state sources. The project aims to modernise the building, protect its vast collection, and improve visitor access. Officials have described the museum as a key cultural landmark for the region. The state of Hesse has pledged up to €11 million for the museum’s renewal, with the federal government indicating potential support of an additional €20 million. Hesse’s Minister for Art and Culture, Timon Gremmels, highlighted the museum’s role as a cultural flagship for Offenbach and the wider state, stressing its value in education, preservation, and research.

The city of Offenbach will manage the project, covering overall financing and any unexpected costs or risks. A letter of intent between the state and the city outlines the agreement, which has been approved by the city’s executive council but still requires final sign-off from the city assembly.

Before construction begins, over 30,000 artefacts will be carefully relocated. Each item will be cleaned, treated for pests, digitally recorded, and transported to a temporary storage facility. The renovation itself will focus on upgrading climate control, lighting, and accessibility, ensuring better conditions for both exhibits and visitors.

Paul-Gerhard Weiß, Offenbach’s head of construction, expects the redesign of the listed main building and its forecourt to have a positive effect on the surrounding area. Once complete, the museum plans to expand its role as a national and international centre for education, information, and cultural events. The funding commitments mark a crucial step toward transforming the German Leather Museum into a modern, accessible institution. The upgrades will safeguard its collections while enhancing its function as a hub for research and public engagement. Construction is expected to proceed once the city assembly gives final approval.
