Free re:claim event challenges German media's inequality crisis

A new media event called re:claim is offering an alternative to the well-known re:publica conference. While the standard ticket for re:publica costs €359, re:claim remains free and open to all. Organisers describe it as a space for marginalised voices in German media, with a striking symbol—a giant fist gripping a pen against a green background. re:claim was put together by five freelance journalists, including Henrike Müller-Mahn. The event comes in response to growing concerns about discrimination in the industry. A recent survey by the Kitt Collective found that 80% of respondents experienced microaggressions at work in German media. Another 13% reported facing outright racial slurs.

Nearly half of those surveyed also believe their background has led to professional disadvantages. At *re:claim*, discussions will tackle these issues head-on. Sham Jaff, one of the speakers, plans to question the neutrality of international law and push for antifascist journalism. Unlike larger conferences, *re:claim* operates without major sponsors. So far, it has raised €480 in donations. Organisers continue to accept contributions through their Instagram account.

re:claim provides a platform for journalists and media workers often sidelined in the industry. The event’s free entry and focus on discrimination reflect its mission to challenge mainstream media structures. With talks and discussions already planned, it aims to spark change in how German media addresses inequality.
