This German Daycare Teaches Kids Sustainability Through Forest Adventures

AWO Herrenstrunden Daycare has taken a unique approach to early education by blending nature with climate awareness. Housed in a former village school with a ship-shaped extension, the centre became the first and only KlimaKita (Climate Daycare) in the Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis. Here, children explore forests, study ecosystems, and learn sustainability through hands-on activities. The daycare opened its doors in 1998, repurposing an old school building with a modern, ship-inspired design. Yet instead of sailing the seas, the children dive into nature. The nearby forest serves as their favourite playground, where they follow its rules and discover ways to protect its resources.

Climate education is woven into daily life. Young learners collect earthworms in jars, calling them their 'worm hotel' to observe their behaviour. They planted apple seeds in raised beds, aiming to 'grow their breakfast'. Discussions about air pollution lead to brainstorming solutions, while experiments with wind and air use simple, engaging materials. Sustainability is practised, not just taught. The children save water, use energy wisely, and prepare meals with seasonal, local produce. They also pick up litter in the neighbourhood, turning their findings into collages that highlight pollution. Parents sometimes join in, supporting activities shaped by the children’s own ideas. One key lesson emerged when the group discussed who shares the Earth. They realised that all living things depend on each other—and everyone deserves to thrive.

The daycare’s innovative approach has made it a pioneer in the region. By combining outdoor exploration with climate lessons, the children develop a practical understanding of environmental care. Their activities—from studying worms to reducing waste—reflect a commitment to shaping a more sustainable future.
