Sochi strengthens green policies to protect and expand urban forests
A working meeting in Sochi has addressed the city’s efforts to preserve and expand its green spaces. Viktor Teplyakov, a deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Krasnodar Krai, led the discussions on improving urban greening policies and oversight. The meeting brought together key figures, including Mikhail Kharlamov, Alexander Zvyagin, Denis Skrygin, Sergei Bobkov, and Andrei Nikonchuk. They examined the current challenges in planning and carrying out greening projects across Sochi.
Participants proposed several measures to strengthen the city’s environmental policies. These included a full inventory of Sochi’s green fund and stricter monitoring of compensatory tree planting. Changes to the tree-felling permit system were also suggested to ensure better regulation. Sochi already conducts regular checks and phytosanitary treatments to maintain its green areas. Teplyakov stressed the need to uphold the city’s status as one of Russia’s greenest. An evaluation of existing plant protection programmes will follow to identify areas for improvement. The group plans to submit their recommendations to the Legislative Assembly deputies and the Sochi City Assembly’s relevant committee for further action.
The proposals aim to tighten oversight and improve the management of Sochi’s green spaces. If adopted, the measures could lead to more effective protection and expansion of the city’s urban forest. Final decisions will depend on the approval of local authorities.
