Nizhny Novgorod Transforms Cleanups Into Vibrant Community Celebrations
Nizhny Novgorod has launched the National Cleanup, Local Flair campaign to turn routine waste collection into lively community gatherings. The initiative blends environmental action with cultural events, aiming to make ecological responsibility a daily habit for residents. This year’s expanded programme has already drawn over 37,000 participants across 30 regions.
The campaign kicked off with Governor Gleb Nikitin and Tatyana Kovalyova, director of the Compass Foundation, in attendance. Their presence highlighted the project’s growing influence and regional support. Nizhny Novgorod’s event featured local performances and interactive activities, moving beyond the usual focus on trash bags and gloves.
Organisers designed the initiative to link environmental stewardship with engaging experiences. By adding cultural programmes, they hope to shift public perception and encourage long-term participation. Dmitry Kobylkin, chair of the State Duma’s environmental committee, noted how grassroots efforts like these shape community attitudes toward sustainability. So far, volunteers have collected more than 400 tons of waste. The campaign’s success lies in its ability to unite people around shared values while making cleanups feel less like chores and more like celebrations.
The project’s momentum continues to grow, with thousands joining cleanup events across Russia. By combining environmental action with cultural elements, the campaign fosters a sense of shared purpose. Its long-term goal remains embedding ecological responsibility into everyday life.
