Nio's next-gen battery swap stations debut in June with broader EV compatibility
Nio Inc is set to launch its first batch of fifth-generation battery swap stations in mid-to-late June. These upgraded stations will support a broader range of vehicles, including large SUVs and compact EVs. For the first time, users of Nio’s Firefly brand will also gain access to the service.
The new stations are currently undergoing internal testing to ensure compatibility with all Nio models. Safety and efficiency remain key priorities in the redesign. The redesigned stations will accommodate vehicles with varying wheelbases, from compact Firefly EVs to larger models like the ES9. This flexibility marks a shift from previous generations, which had more limited compatibility.
Firefly, Nio’s budget-friendly EV brand, has expanded into international markets, including several European countries and right-hand drive regions. The brand recently rolled out its Aster 1.5.0 system upgrade, which includes a parking assist feature for battery swap stations. Despite the upgrades, the starting price of the facelifted Firefly EV remains unchanged at 119,800 yuan (around $17,670).
Nio’s expansion plans include adding over 1,000 new battery swap stations this year, bringing its total in China to 3,873. To manage costs, the company is increasingly relying on partnerships to share infrastructure expenses and benefits.
Safety and performance testing is still underway to guarantee a smooth experience for all users. The fifth-generation stations aim to streamline the battery swap process while maintaining high reliability standards. The launch of the fifth-generation stations will broaden access for Firefly owners and improve support for Nio’s full vehicle lineup. With over 1,000 new stations planned, the company is accelerating its infrastructure growth. The upgrades also reinforce Nio’s push into global markets through its Firefly brand.
