HCM City launches friendship tree-planting campaign to honor Hồ Chí Minh's legacy

A friendship tree-planting campaign was launched in HCM City on May 16, marking the 136th birth anniversary of President Hồ Chí Minh. The event also looked ahead to the 50th anniversary of Sài Gòn-Gia Định being renamed HCM City in 1976. Organised by the HCM City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO), the initiative included the unveiling of a 'Friendship Tree Garden' in Phú An Ward. HUFO President Hà Thanh explained that the programme supports the city’s goal of expanding green urban spaces. It also aligns with the ongoing 'Planting one million green trees' campaign. Over the next five years, HUFO aims to plant 5,000 trees across the city.

Cuban Consul General Mauricio Alejandro Martinez Duque praised the city’s environmental efforts. He highlighted the importance of the 'Planting 5,000 green trees' and 'Planting one million green trees' programmes in promoting sustainability. The diplomat noted that such initiatives encourage dialogue, cooperation, and solidarity among nations while raising public awareness of environmental protection and eco-friendly lifestyles. After the tree-planting ceremony, delegates visited Phú An Bamboo Village. There, they took part in activities showcasing traditional Vietnamese culture. The Friendship Tree Garden itself stands as a symbol of unity between HCM City residents and their international partners.

The campaign reinforces HCM City’s commitment to green development and cultural exchange. With plans to plant 5,000 trees by 2030, the initiative will contribute to the city’s broader environmental goals. The event also honoured President Hồ Chí Minh’s legacy while celebrating the upcoming 50th anniversary of the city’s renaming.
