Almaly District transforms housing with Nurly Zher upgrades and community input
Over the past few years, Almaly District has transformed 764 courtyard areas—replacing asphalt, installing playgrounds, laying pedestrian paths, and implementing a range of improvements for residents' convenience. This was announced by Almaly District akim (mayor) Yerzhan Seitinov during a briefing held by Almaty's Regional Communications Service.
Seitinov noted that 95% of the district's courtyards have been either renovated or built from scratch. The majority of Almaly District consists of multi-unit residential housing, comprising 1,395 buildings managed by 206 property management bodies. This year, residents of 460 apartment buildings transitioned to a new housing management model, moving away from the traditional condominium associations (KSK).
The district akim reported successful implementation of the Nurly Zher housing modernization program.
"This year, residents of 39 apartment buildings upgraded 105 elevator systems, while 10 residential buildings underwent repairs to roofs, facades, and utility networks under the program," Seitinov said.
Additionally, 12 apartment building facades were renovated as part of routine maintenance work.
"In 2021, we improved 64 courtyard spaces, with a key feature being collaborative decision-making with residents. Through ongoing dialogue, we jointly determined what to keep, expand, or remove, reaching consensus on each renovation," the district head continued.
Notably, each courtyard was inspected in the presence of residents. While 42 courtyards remain untouched, the district administration plans to renovate them in 2022, with residents already involved in designing the upcoming repairs.
Many of the courtyards now feature zones tailored to different age groups and interests, with special attention given to child safety and greenery. Larger courtyards include circular paths for walking, cycling, and jogging.
