Emmendingen's teens redesign a pedestrian underpass with €20,000 city funding

A pedestrian underpass in Emmendingen is set for a fresh look, thanks to the city’s young residents. The 8er-Rat, a group of eighth-grade students from local schools, will lead the redesign as part of a wider push to involve youth in community projects. The work begins with a deep clean at the end of May, funded by a €20,000 budget allocation for 2026. The underpass at Neubronnstraße and Ramie-Straße will close temporarily from May 27 to May 30, 2026. During this time, crews will prepare the space for its transformation. The city has earmarked €20,000 to cover the costs of cleaning and redesigning the area.

The project stems from Emmendingen’s youth participation initiative, which encourages young people to help shape their surroundings. Students from the *8er-Rat*—representing every school in the city—worked together to create the new design. Their plans will come to life in early June when they take charge of the underpass’s artistic revamp. This effort reflects the city’s commitment to giving young voices a role in local decisions. The *8er-Rat* was formed specifically to channel ideas from eighth graders into tangible community improvements.

Once complete, the underpass will feature a design entirely conceived by Emmendingen’s students. The €20,000 investment ensures the project moves forward without delays. The city hopes this collaboration will inspire further youth-led initiatives in the future.
