A floating sauna in Norway turned this family's fjord trip into pure magic

A family trip to Norway took an unusual turn when the author rented a floating sauna in Flåm. The experience, booked through FjordSauna, became the highlight of their summer holiday. With two young sons in tow, they braved the chilly fjord waters after warming up in a glass-walled sauna.

The journey began with a mix of train and bus rides from Oslo to Flåm. Once there, the family booked a private session for 2,990 NOK—around $297 or €256 at the time. The sauna itself was moored in a fjord for 90 minutes, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape.

Inside, the setup included a changing area, a sauna room with large glass windows, and a transparent plastic hatch for quick access to the water. Outside, the fjord’s temperature hovered between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius, while the July air stayed mild at 21 degrees. The author’s sons, aged 11 and 13, joined in, making the most of the contrast between the sauna’s heat and the icy plunge. FjordSauna offers both shared and private bookings, but the family opted for exclusivity. The rental gave them full control over the experience, from adjusting the heat to choosing when to leap into the fjord.

The floating sauna proved a memorable part of the trip, blending relaxation with adventure. The family agreed it was worth the cost, leaving them with a unique story from their Norwegian getaway. For those visiting Flåm, the experience remains an option—whether for a private session or a shared dip in the fjord.
