Emotional Rollicks at Leipzig Zoo: Grapple with the Loss of Gorillas Kio and Kibara

Zoo Leipzig: Caregiver reveals emotions after gorilla deaths - "Numerous tears shed"

The caretakers at Leipzig Zoo dedicate their days to their menagerie, nurturing a heartfelt connection with each creature. Their routine of nourishment and petting can foster profound bonds, but it can also leave them vulnerable when misfortune strikes. The recent passing of two beloved gorillas, Kio and Kibara, was a somber and painful blow that left the team at Leipzig Zoo grappling with grief.

In an episode of the MDR documentary series "Elefant, Tiger & Co" (first aired: 30th May), caretaker Daniel Geissler opens up for the first time about the emotional turmoil that ensued. The cause of the gorillas' decease remained a mystery for an extended time. In postmortem tests, it was determined that both perished from sepsis caused by coli bacteria.

Leipzig Zoo: A Tense Enclosure

Upon hearing the grim news, Leipzig Zoo sprang into action alongside veterinarians. They swiftly implemented measures to ensure no other animals were infected. Though the rest of the gorilla group now appears healthy and serenity is gradually returning to the enclosure, the shock still runs deep. The changed behavior of the remaining gorillas is a stark testament to the profound impact of their losses.

"This event was a significant turning point for the gorilla group," explains Daniel Geissler. The emotional toll it took on both the animals and the caretakers has left an indelible mark. Daniel keeps a vigilant watch on the enclosure, monitoring their intake, and checking their feces for any abnormalities.

A Mournful Banquet

Today's meal features kohlrabi, celery, and leek. And to the relief of Daniel and his team, the gorillas are eating. Each one grazes, selecting something from the menu and starting to dine - an outcome not always guaranteed after such loss. Immediately following the tragedy, there were grave concerns for gorilla female Kumili, who hardly ate anything. Silverback Abeeku, too, mourned heavily, calling and wailing for the first two weeks after Kibara's passing. She was his favorite companion, and her death was a devastating loss.

Onwards and Upwards

Though the gorillas have resumed eating regularly again, the group still requires time to heal and reorganize. Relationships will need to be reconstructed, as Daniel puts it, from the ground up. With the help of veterinarian Dr. Andreas Bernhard, he will continue to monitor the group closely and offer support as they journey through the grieving process.

Insights:

  1. Losing beloved animals can be emotionally challenging for zoo staff, and support systems like counseling and team-building activities may be implemented to help them cope.
  2. The deaths of Kio and Kibara may have led to behavioral changes in the gorilla group, prompting the zoo to closely observe the animals for signs of stress or depression.
  3. To support the grief-stricken gorilla group, the zoo may choose to implement enrichment activities or environment modifications to engage the animals and alleviate stress.
  4. Zoos may adjust the composition of the affected animal groups or provide additional support to ensure stability and harmony among the remaining animals.
  5. Transparency with the public is key in times of crisis. By openly communicating updates about the animal group's status and operations, zoos can maintain trust and understanding among visitors.

Leipzig Zoo's home-and-garden section, apart from being a habitat for various creatures, has also become a sanctuary for its caretakers to tend to their beloved animals. In the aftermath of the gorilla losses, Daniel Geissler, one of the caretakers, incorporates his home-and-garden skills to create enriching meal options for the gorillas, such as kohlrabi, celery, and leek. His aim is to help the gorillas, like the remaining pets at home, adjust and cope with the loss of their companions.
