Ysgol Bryn Deva Leads in Active Travel, Wins Bronze Award
Ysgol Bryn Deva in Flintshire has been making waves in promoting active travel. Supported by the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust and Welsh Cycling, the school borrowed balance bikes from Costco Travel for a day of skills practice, involving the entire school community in its Active Journeys programme.
Ysgol Bryn Deva's commitment to active travel has yielded impressive results. The school has significantly increased the number of families traveling to school by foot, bike, or scooter. This dedication has earned them the Bronze Active Travel School Award for encouraging sustainable travel.
The school's participation in the Active Journeys Programme has been beneficial for its pupils. They've learned about safe routes, bike and scooter maintenance, and even had their equipment repaired by volunteers. The programme's impact is evident in the school's fourth-place finish in Wales during the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust's Big Pedal 2019, with an impressive 76% of pupils traveling actively. To further engage students, Scooter Fridays were introduced, allowing pupils to ride scooters during lunchtime on Fridays.
Ysgol Bryn Deva's involvement in the Active Journeys Programme has not only promoted active and sustainable travel but has also positively impacted pupils' skills, confidence, road awareness, and wellbeing. The school's achievements, including its fourth-place finish in the Big Pedal 2019, are a testament to its commitment to active travel and its benefits.
