Young Graduates Revive Bát Tràng Pottery Village
A heartening trend is emerging in Bát Tràng Traditional Pottery Village. Young people with university degrees are returning to their roots, reviving the traditional pottery craft. Among them is Nguyen Minh Quang, a 25-year-old who has made significant strides in preserving and promoting the art.
Quang's journey began at the age of 19, when he started working with pottery. Six years later, he has mastered all stages of vase making. After graduating from Hà Nội University of Arts and Design, he chose to restore his family's long-dormant workshop. His dedication has turned the workshop into a magnet for young people eager to learn the craft.
Quang's initiatives extend beyond pottery. Since 2023, he has organised cultural and social activities, contributed to poverty reduction and social protection, and played a role in administrative reforms. His efforts earned him third place in the "Golden Hands" competition of Bát Tràng Village.
Many young villagers, inspired by Quang and others, are returning to the village to develop their craft. They bring fresh ideas, creating unique ways of practising the pottery craft. The village's artisans association supports this trend by organising competitions and exhibitions, fostering skill exchange and talent showcase.
The return of young, educated artisans to Bát Tràng Traditional Pottery Village signals a promising future for the traditional craft. With their passion, innovation, and dedication, they are not only preserving the art but also infusing it with new life and attracting tourists. The village, under their care, is poised to thrive as a vibrant centre of pottery and craft village tourism.
