Yakutia's Bold Plan to Revive Farmland and Boost Food Security

Yakutia is stepping up efforts to restore and improve its farmland. Last year, authorities pumped 5.8 million cubic metres of water to support drinking supplies, households, and irrigation. Now, a new strategy is being developed to further boost agricultural productivity across the region.

In 2022, around 1,200 hectares of farmland in Yakutia underwent reclamation work. The following year, these efforts expanded significantly, with projects covering 16,400 hectares. Officials also maintained 57 hydraulic structures to support water management.

Sergei Mestnikov, Yakutia's Deputy Prime Minister, has now ordered relevant agencies to draft a long-term land reclamation plan. The goal is to make farming more sustainable and increase yields. The move follows years of targeted water pumping and soil restoration to meet local needs.

The new strategy will build on recent progress, including large-scale irrigation and land repairs. With 16,400 hectares already treated in 2023, the plan aims to secure Yakutia's agricultural future. Authorities expect improved water access and better soil quality for farmers in the coming years.
