Winter's melancholy unveils a hidden secret tucked away in a garden.

In a heartwarming StoryCorps interview, Patrice Ball recounts the blossoming love story with her late husband, Byron Ball, a dedicated high school science teacher and passionate gardener. They connected as single parents, both having been previously married.

"In his profile, he kind of had a 'dad bod,' but I have a 'mom bod' (laughter)," Patrice reminisced. Despite this initial observation, she was struck by the warmth in Byron's eyes and the kindness in his smile. They communicated daily on the phone, bonding over shared humor, sensitivity, and their contrasting gardening habits.

As a busy single mom, Patrice did not have the time to nurture their shared hobby. However, Byron subtly enhanced the appearance of her backyard, gradually taking on more gardening tasks to make it look more appealing. His actions demonstrated an unspoken affection, always thinking of ways to show his care without being asked.

Eight years into their relationship, Byron was diagnosed with cancer. They exchanged vows in his backyard garden, and nine weeks later, he passed away. The emptiness of their home was most evident during the winter months, with holidays feeling muted and lackluster.

That spring, Patrice noticed small purple tulips appearing in her garden—Byron's favorite color. She felt a profound connection, realizing that these flowers were a poignant reminder of his love that persisted beyond his life. "I could not hold in the tears because, with every ounce of my being, I knew that I was loved, that it didn't die with him. He wanted me to know that," she says.

Though difficult at times, Patrice found solace and joy in gardening, a reminder of the tender bond she shared with Byron. "When I'm in the garden, I have had a few tears, but mostly it's joyful," she shared. "I think that's what Byron would've wanted."

This emotional StoryCorps interview, titled "A Secret in a Garden After a Winter of Grief," is archived at the Library of Congress and serves as a testament to the healing power of love and gardening during difficult times.
