PlakART 2024: A City-Wide Art Exhibition in Solingen

In June and July 2024, Solingen, a city in Germany, celebrated its 650-year jubilee with an unique art event called PlakART 2024. This city-wide art contest transformed public poster spaces into a vibrant art exhibition, displaying 42 artworks across the city's streets, squares, and online on the homepage solingen650.de.

The common theme of this year’s PlakART event was social cohesion, focusing on a society without exclusion and discrimination. Many of the posters expressed this theme visually and were connected to campaigns encouraging inclusivity. The purpose of the contest was to provide a stage for the Solingen art scene in the cityscape.

People were invited to engage with the artworks by viewing them, voting for their favourite poster, and entering a raffle to win prints of the artworks. The contest served as an additional platform for showcasing the artworks of Solingen artists. Numerous artists participated in the contest, each contributing their unique style to the broad stylistic range of the Solingen art scene.

The four lucky winners of the PlakART 2024 contest were announced on a specific day in July. They received their unique pieces at the Art Museum in Solingen. The winning artworks included "Diversity" by Judith Funke, "Aquae" by Ulrika Eller-Rüter, "Coming Home" by Conny Schüssler, and "We go...Home!" by Stefan Seeger.

The PlakART 2024 contest was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been taking place since 2021. City Director and Cultural Commissioner Dagmar Becker drew the winning tickets for the contest from over 450 entries. Participants could submit their photographs online, making the contest accessible to all.

Overall, PlakART 2024 was a successful city-wide art event that celebrated Solingen's rich art scene and promoted social inclusion. The event continues to provide a platform for artists to showcase their work and engage with the community, making art an integral part of the city's fabric.

Over the summer of 2024, the home-and-garden website solingen650.de showcased a city-wide art exhibition, PlakART 2024, displaying 42 artworks across Solingen's streets and public spaces. This lifestyle event, focusing on social cohesion and inclusivity, provided a stage for Solingen artists to contribute their unique styles to the cityscape.
