The image shows a large tank filled with lots of white foam sitting on top of a cement wall, surrounded by metal rods, stairs, railings, and other objects. In the background, there are trees, poles, wires, and a clear blue sky. This image is likely related to the California Department of Environmental Protection's approval of a wastewater treatment plant.

Willich's Water Deemed Safe After PFAS Contamination Scandal

Willich's water has remained safe despite past PFAS contamination caused by illegal waste disposal. Two men were recently sentenced for serious environmental offences linked to the pollution. The city council has now approved a detailed report on water quality, confirming all legal standards are met.

Between January 2020 and June 2024, a company owner and an employee illegally handled tons of PFAS-containing firefighting foam. Their actions led to groundwater contamination, particularly in Anrath. The substances were improperly stored, processed, and disposed of, resulting in elevated PFAS levels in local water sources.

The city has taken steps to address the issue. Since early 2024, remediation efforts have significantly reduced PFOS concentrations in drinking water. Levels dropped from 20-50 nanograms per litre to below 10 ng/L by mid-2025, according to environmental monitoring. An activated carbon adsorption plant is now operational to secure a long-term, safe water supply.

During a recent meeting, the city council reviewed and approved the drinking water quality report. Representatives from all political groups praised Willich Municipal Utilities for keeping the public informed. The report will be attached to the meeting minutes and made available through the council's information system.

Willich's drinking water continues to meet all regulatory limits, with no health risks identified at any point. The precautionary threshold for vulnerable groups is also being observed. With ongoing remediation and monitoring, the city aims to maintain compliance and protect its water supply.
