Why This American Chose Taipei as His Forever Home for Under $2,000 a Month
Dom Jones has made Taipei his permanent home after years of feeling drawn to Asia. The American first visited Taiwan in 2019 and was struck by its energy during a brief stopover. Now, he lives in a spacious apartment in one of the city’s most desirable areas—all for under $2,000 a month.
Jones’s fascination with Asia began in childhood. Growing up in a diverse Los Angeles neighbourhood, he had many Asian classmates and was exposed to their cultures early on. A Cambodian family next door introduced him to new foods when he was just seven or eight, sparking a lifelong love for Asian cuisine.
His interest deepened in college, where he studied Vietnamese and Tagalog while working as a Christian missionary in Vietnamese communities. But it was Taiwan that truly captured his attention. After a 24-hour layover in December 2019, he felt an immediate connection to the country’s atmosphere. Multiple visits followed, each reinforcing his decision. By September 2021, Jones had chosen to relocate permanently. He cited Taiwan’s safety, strong infrastructure, and low cost of living as key factors. The healthcare system, known for its accessibility and high standards, also played a role. In Taipei, he enjoys the freedom to explore the city at any hour without concern. The favourable exchange rate allows him to rent a three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment in a prime location. His move to Taipei in 2025 marked the final step in a long journey toward making Taiwan his home.
Jones now lives comfortably in Taipei, benefiting from affordability, safety, and world-class healthcare. His decision reflects years of cultural exposure and careful consideration. The city’s mix of modern convenience and rich traditions suits his lifestyle perfectly.
