Why German Gardeners Must Start Seeds Indoors by February for Thriving Plants
Germany's short summers and late spring frosts make early indoor sowing essential for many plants. Heat-loving crops like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants need a head start indoors to thrive. Gardeners must adjust sowing times based on regional microclimates to avoid stunted or overgrown seedlings before safe outdoor planting after mid-May.
In colder northern or exposed areas, sowing should begin in March to prevent seedlings from becoming leggy before transplanting. Milder southern or sheltered regions allow for earlier starts, with sowing possible as early as late January or February. Ideal germination and growth require consistent indoor temperatures between 20°C and 26°C.
Sweet and hot peppers thrive when sown in late February in central regions. Eggplants, however, should be sown slightly later than peppers to prevent overgrowth by the time they are ready for transplanting. Late-maturing tomatoes, particularly tall or indeterminate greenhouse varieties, also benefit from an early start to ensure they are ready for late May planting.
Certain flowers demand an early sowing period due to their prolonged growth cycles. Lisianthus, which takes 150 to 180 days from sowing to flowering, is best sown in February or March. Petunias and lobelia, with their tiny seeds and extended growth periods, require early sowing to produce blooms by May or June. Other flowers like Shabo carnations, violas, primroses, wax begonias, verbena, and heliotrope also perform better with an early start.
Vegetables such as celery and leeks benefit from early sowing as well. Celery, with a growing season of up to 180 days, needs an early start to develop fully. Leeks, when grown from seedlings, yield larger, better-blanched stems. Strawberries sown in February or March can provide an early harvest by July or August.
Early sowing ensures that heat-sensitive and long-season plants mature properly before Germany's short summer ends. By adjusting sowing times to local conditions, gardeners can achieve stronger plants and earlier harvests. Proper timing also maximises flowering periods for ornamental plants, leading to healthier gardens throughout the season.
