What do you do when an uninvited creature comes through the bedroom wall?

A persistent squirrel has been causing trouble in the home of Canadian artist Joan Krygsman for over a year. The creature took up residence in her walls before attempting to break into her living space by gnawing through drywall. Krygsman, a musician and founder of the band Trout Lily, eventually found a simple solution to the problem herself.

The squirrel first moved into Krygsman’s walls more than a year ago. A few months later, it began tearing at the drywall in an effort to enter her home. Frustrated, she reached out to Skedaddle, a wildlife removal service, only to receive a quote of $2,200 for their help.

Instead of paying the steep fee, Krygsman took matters into her own hands. She purchased a one-way squirrel door for just $50 and installed it herself. The device allowed the squirrel to leave but prevented it from returning, finally solving the issue. Krygsman is well-known for her creative work. As a singer, songwriter, and musician, she founded the band Trout Lily. Beyond music, she is also an illustrator, designer, and the founder of Striped Aardvark. Her varied career has included roles as an accountant, librarian, flight attendant, and eco-warrior. A proud resident of Dundas, Ontario, she is also a mother and active member of the local community.

The squirrel is now gone, thanks to Krygsman’s resourcefulness. Her low-cost solution worked where expensive professional help seemed unnecessary. The experience adds another unusual chapter to the life of this multitalented artist and musician.
