Jeez, it ain't every day you've got a bunch of people grilling up some smokin' hot eats in front of the Friesensportplatz. Folks in Schwerin's Weststadt can't help but wonder who these BBQ aficionados are. "We figured it's high time the fine Schwerin folks got to know us and didn't stand there dumbfounded by the fence," says Vincent Eickelberg, team captain of Grillverein Bergfest BBQ. "So, mark your calendars! You're invited to our open day!"
Brews, Brats, and Babbling 'Bout Barbecue
Whether you're just looking to chat or fancy learning a thing or two about grilling, everyone's invited to swing by. Expect some live grilling action, taste tests, fireside burgers, and a sizzling delight known as "Bergfest BBQ experience." But, remember, these succulent temptations will be available for a small fee. Also, there'll be interactive activities and a glimpse into the fascinating routines of the Grillverein Bergfest BBQ, which regularly host their Bergfest evenings at their clubhouse.
This passionate crew has been getting together for over a decade. Wednesdays after work are their days, and it all started with a mug of beer, a tasty bratwurst, and a plump pork neck steak. Competition, excitement, and mouthwatering dishes soon followed after they learned about the state grilling championship and dove headfirst into the world of grilling.
"Having so much fun and looking like genuine pros, we established our own club in 2023," Vincent Eickelberg explains. "Grillsportvereinigung Schwerin Bergfest BBQ, that's what we call ourselves. The sports part? A championship can get pretty competitive, and you sure work up a sweat."
For a long while, the Bergfest grillers flambéed at Vincent's domicile. Needless to say, they required a home of their own. So, in 2021, they bagged a plot of land at Mittelweg 48 in the Weststadt from the city. "It was a neglected community garden that was gathering dust," Vincent says. "We're giving it a facelift. Onlookers passing by might raise an eyebrow at that yellow house with hearts on the windows. But don't think we're brewing secrets behind a privet hedge. We're an authentic club, and we're throwing our first open day on May 3rd from 1 to 5 PM."

Each and everyone intrigued is welcomed to meet the team or get a spark of inspiration from the flames of the grill. The ladies, too, need not fear! Just like that one woman who graced us with her presence before and then took a break due to pregnancy, we're longing for a diverse group.
So, no, we're not just a pack of good-for-nothings guzzling beer and chatting about nothing. Our focus centers on the grilling championships. When the time comes for a showdown, the team doesn't only grill on Wednesday evenings but also on weekends. And, yes, we've claimed multiple titles, including "Best Entrecote Steak" at the state grilling championship.
At the open day, the experienced grillers will share their secrets and grant visitors a chance to test their grilling skills. Their current preference is the fire plate, but they also wield the kettle grill, gas grill, and their self-constructed small watersmoker for that delectable smoky flavor.
By the way, folks, Vincent and the gang are now preparing for the State Grilling Championship on May 31st in Rostock and the German Grilling Championship in Ferropolis, Saxony-Anhalt in July. And, good news, they'll take requests to grill live at private gardens, corporate celebrations, or summer festivals. "We'll cook anything from finger food to full-blown menus to dessert," Vincent says. "We cater to around ten such events a year to support our club."
