Visionary educator Dr Janardan Waghmare leaves behind a legacy of reform and inspiration

Dr Janardan Waghmare, a respected intellectual, educationist, and former Rajya Sabha member, passed away on March 2, 2023, at the age of 91. His contributions to education, governance, and literature left a lasting impact across Maharashtra and beyond. His final rites will take place in his native village, Kavtha, on Tuesday at 11 am.

Born on November 11, 1934, in Janwal village of Chakur tehsil, Dr Waghmare rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in Indian education. As the first principal of Rajarshi Shahu College, Latur, from 1970 to 1994, he transformed the institution into a hub of academic excellence. His leadership also introduced the 'Latur Pattern', a disciplined and rigorous educational model that gained national recognition for producing high-achieving students.

In 1994, he became the founding vice-chancellor of Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University, Nanded. Over five years, he established a strong institutional framework and introduced major reforms. His political career included a direct election as President of the Latur Municipal Council in 2001, where he was known for his anti-corruption stance and transparent administration.

Dr Waghmare's influence extended to national politics when he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Sharad Pawar from 2008 to 2014. During this period, he served on important committees and represented India at the United Nations in 2009. His literary work was equally prolific, with over 100 books in English, Hindi, and Marathi on subjects like philosophy, spirituality, yoga, and social reform. Many of these works received prestigious awards, including the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Dalit Mitra Award in 1994.

Dr Waghmare's legacy spans education, governance, and literature. His contributions shaped institutions, inspired students, and enriched public discourse. The final ceremonies will be held in Kavtha, Ausa tehsil, marking the end of a life dedicated to knowledge and service.
