Viersen’s New Coppice Forest Lets Residents Plant Memorial Trees for Loved Ones

Viersen has launched a new tree coppice forest project, blending conservation with community involvement. The first tree was planted on 15 November 2025, marking the start of a long-term woodland initiative. Residents can now sponsor memorial trees, with personalized plaques, as part of the scheme.

The project’s opening ceremony took place on a 2.75-hectare site between the A61 highway and the Hoher Busch area. Mayor Christoph Hopp joined the event, where 30 private sponsors planted their trees. A total of 50 sessile oaks will eventually stand across the area, spaced 23 metres apart.

The tree project combines forestry with public participation, offering a lasting way to remember loved ones. With ongoing planting and sustainable management, the woodland will develop over decades. The city expects the initiative to benefit both the environment and the community.
